We have always loved visiting Lewes, located in the South Downs, this historic market town is full of character, independent businesses and stories that stretch back centuries. We're delighted to have opened our doors here, and we wanted to share our favourite spots with you.
We have asked our new store manager, Laura, the places that the locals rave about, that will make your visit memorable.
Getting There & Where to Stay
If you're planning a visit, Lewes is just 15 minutes from Brighton by train, making it the perfect day trip away from the busy streets, or to visit as you travel down. For accommodation, the recently restored White Hart Hotel overlooks the South Downs, or if you're looking for that cottage feel, there are Airbnbs dotted throughout the town where you can settle in and unwind.
Morning: Coffee & Explore
Start your day at Caraffe, our absolute favourite coffee spot. They roast their own beans in-house, and there's something special about knowing exactly where your coffee has come from.
With your coffee in hand, take a stroll through Lewes town centre. Visit Lewes Castle, a 1000-year-old fortress, or explore the Anne of Cleves House, where the home of Henry VIII's fourth wife tells stories of Tudor life. If you're visiting in the autumn, Lewes Bonfire Night is a huge community event that brings the whole town together, a celebration of independence and local spirit.
For those interested in history, Thomas Paine lived here and is believed to have drafted the pamphlets that sparked the American Revolution from this very town.

Midday: Shopping & Lunch
Lewes is filled with independently owned shops and businesses, just like ours. Pop into the weekly farmers market to pick up fresh, local produce for your visit. For lunch, head to Squisito, a fabulous Italian restaurant in the Needlemakers building, or visit Bills, the original restaurant opened by Bill himself!
Then, of course, visit us at Vinegar Hill. Our newest shop is filled with pieces we've handpicked for you. You'll find our own brand items created by artisan communities in India, beautiful homewares to brighten your space, and fashion pieces chosen by our team for their timeless feel. Whether you're looking for something to take home as a memory of Lewes, or simply want to browse and feel inspired, we can’t wait to see you soon.
Afternoon: Nature & Culture
The South Downs offer some of the most beautiful walks in England. Take an afternoon to explore the rolling hills and chalk grasslands, it's the perfect way to reconnect with nature and appreciate why so many independent makers and artists are drawn to this region.
If you're visiting during festival season, Glyndebourne Opera House is world-renowned, especially for its summer festival. Even if you're not catching a performance, the grounds are beautiful to explore.
What we love most about Lewes is its independence. It's a town that celebrates its heritage, supports local businesses and makers, and welcomes visitors with warmth. We hope you'll visit soon and discover why we're so delighted to be part of the community.
