A journal does not have to be a daily recording you feel obligated to complete at the end of each day. Journaling can be uplifting, benefit your mental health and help you keep your life on track. Your journal can be a scrapbook for your thoughts, for your eyes only.
Your mental health can actually benefit from journaling. Regular writing gives you a safe space to write down your thoughts, worries and achievements. It’s a place for you to release the stresses of your daily life, while still reflecting positively on your day.
However, journals don’t always have to be used for writing about your day or your life. They can be a space to track things, note down quotes that inspire you or write lists to organise yourself.
Here are some list ideas to get you started:
- To do lists (daily/weekly/monthly)
- A collection of movies you always wanted to watch
- All the books you want to read before you die
- Places you dream of visiting
- A list of people who have inspired you and why
- A bucket list or life goals (monthly/yearly/lifetime)
- Ideas for self-care – a collection of what makes you feel happier, to be read/viewed when you need a boost
- Gratitude Journal – a list of things you are thankful for, both big and small
Alternatively, you could fill your journal with where you think you are in your life. Write about your living situation, your career, who you are, who you aspire to be, and where you aim to be in a year’s time. Write about the different relationships that exist in your life and why they are hard or a blessing. Are you where you want to be right now? How can things be improved and what are you thankful for?
One section of your journal could be a log of your favourite songs. Include songs that trigger strong memories, e.g. songs from special occasions like weddings, or just songs that make you feel special in some way. This gives you a space to write about the emotions that each song evokes.
Journals can also be the ideal place to track your physical and mental health. Meal planning and diet tracking can easily be recorded and this enables you to set it out exactly how you want. This can also be done with sleep logs and goal trackers.
For the more creative mind, journals are the perfect place to sketch the world around you. Drawing what inspires you or creatively writing out quotes and words that have impacted you. Photography calendars are great for journals too, at the end of each week or month, select your best or most treasured image, post in your journal and write about why you chose it. At the end of the year, you’ll have a selection of images and text to look back on to represent your year.
